Location:
China: Zhengzhou, Henan Province. There is currently one home in a small town outside of Zhengzhou called XinMi.
In-country American leader:
Jane Marcum has led the effort to help children in the Zhengzhou area for nearly 12 years. She teaches English at Zhengzhou University and works with a staff of twelve Chinese locals to administrate the home and care for the children.
Project description:
The children living in the XinMi home come from the rural countryside in the areas surrounding Zhengzhou, some of which are mountainous and difficult to access. This area consists of economically poor agricultural and mining communities with small family farms making up the majority of the commerce in the area. The children come to the home have arrived before they are 12 years old, but some are now in high school and college. Most of the 40 children are between 8 and 12 years old and are under the full care and guardianship of the home.

There is one large building with four separate living areas where the children are cared for by the mothers employed by the home. There are two mothers for each home, each working in schedules of two days on, two days off. The mothers cook the meals, enjoy time with the children in the evenings, help the children make sure that they maintain their habits of cleanliness, and manage the work of the home. Upon visiting, it is very clear that both the mothers and the children love each other very much and enjoy their lives at the home.
Each of the living areas consist of a small kitchen, a boys and girls bedroom area with bunk beds, a bathroom, and a central common space for eating and completing homework. There is also a large concrete courtyard where the children run and play basketball, badminton, ping pong, skip rope, and play other games.

This home is run and administrated in cooperation with the local Chinese governments in Zhengzhou and XinMi. Through the relationships that the home has with the government, they are able to identify and validate the background of the children who will come to the home and continue to operate successfully under their oversight. Jane has full administrative control over the way that the home is operated. She hires and dismisses the staff as needed, and provides direction for each initiative. In return, the government provides access to the real estate where the home is located, local oversight of the staff, and accounting for expenses of the home.
SeventyTwo partnership:
SeventyTwo is actively engaging partners to provide resources to support the home and provide leadership in the expansion of the work for additional homes in the Zhengzhou area.
Strategic goals
SeventyTwo has several strategic goals in China. These goals will be attained through our partners help and support:
- Fully fund the home in XinMi and maximize the opportunity to help orphaned children in this area. These funds will pay for the daily care of the children, their healthcare, the administration of the home, and enrichment opportunities such as educational field trips, summer camps, and summer school.
- Provide funds and labor assistance for expansion opportunities using the existing building.
- Employ and send Americans to China to live in the Zhengzhou area and help with the administration of existing and new orphanage homes.
- Build and staff additional homes in the area to reach out to orphans in each suburban city and countryside village around Zhengzhou.
Partner opportunities
The following opportunities are available through SeventyTwo to achieve the strategic goals in China:
- Sponsor the home to support the general operating costs. Operating costs for the home to support 40 children are between $75,000 and $80,000 per year. Supporting one living area of approximately 10 children costs between $15,000 and $20,000 per year.
- Sponsor an individual child. A family can support a child each month. An additional opportunity is to become a pen pal with the child. Your letters will be translated into Chinese so the child can read them and respond.
- Short-term mission trip to China. Your church or organization can send a mission team to China where they will visit the children, learn about China and the Chinese culture, and join in the work of SeventyTwo in China. Teams will complete scheduled work projects and provide needed assistance to the staff at the home.
- In-country internship for individuals interested in working with orphans in the Zhengzhou area. You will teach English at Zhengzhou University and work with the staff of the home to provide assistance in the work of the ministry. The commitment term of the internship is one year and there is an interview and selection process for each applicant.
Additional details for each opportunity listed above are available from SeventyTwo upon request. Please contact Ryan Hale at ryan.hale@seventytwo.org or (636) 566-8343.
